One of New York’s iconic events returns this week as the New York Philharmonic gets set to perform outdoor concerts throughout the city, including one on Friday night in Central Park. The event starts at 8 p.m. on the Great Lawn (entrance at West 81st or 86th) and you’re encouraged to bring a picnic, and maybe some bug spray (Tweet a photo of your picnic with the hashtag #picnicgramnyp and you could win a free t-shirt. Or just, you know, eat the food without taking a picture of it.).
Two fun facts: the Central Park concert tends to attract about 50,000 people. And just to put on the concerts, the organizers need about 2,000 pounds of ice, much of it to cool down the people who set up the stage and grounds.
If you miss this concert, there’s another one in the park on Monday.
You can find several outdoor events on our calendar this week, including movies, plays and concerts, most of them free.

Well, if it does rain they could always play Handel’s “Water Music”.
IF the orchestra can “Handel” it, that is.
According to Wikipedia: “The Water Music is scored for a relatively large orchestra, making it suitable for outdoor performance…. (version for a smaller orchestra) is not suitable for outdoor performance, as the sound of stringed instruments does not carry well in the open air.”
Especially in the rain.
🙂
Or if it rains… It’ll be like a Classical Woodstock.
With the Announcer saying… “You aren’t drinking poison Wine. The Wine’s not poison. It’s just badly manufactured Wine. You are not going to die. We have treated 300 cases and it’s all just badly manufactured Wine. So if you think you’ve taken poison, you haven’t. But if you’re worried, just drink half a glass/bottle.”
