Julie Qiu came upon this crash involving a taxicab and another vehicle at 80th street and Broadway on Tuesday around 10 a.m. Two people were taken to St. Luke’s hospital, although it did not appear that the injuries were life-threatening, according to NYPD. Witnesses gave conflicting statements as to who had the right of way.
I saw that accident yesterday. It’s said that cab drivers using foreign licenses are driving in the City. Is it possible that they might be responsible for causing accidents due to their not being schooled in NYC driving protocol ? They’re so much graft going on these days. Who knows?
Did anyone at WSR enquire?
Wow – cab 4A69 here obviously collided hard with SOMETHING – in broad daylight, in a densely populated residential district – to sustain that level of front-end damage. I think this is updated – it was a car, NYPD says?
Very relieved it wasn’t a pedestrian or cyclist who would have been badly injured at the least.
Who was driving this taxi and the other vehicle, how many points existing on the drivers’ licenses, and how many points and what citations were issued for this wreck?
From the look of the damage, my quick guess is the cab, or whatever it struck, was speeding before the crash. I’d bet that one of the nearby buildings or local businesses – Zabar’s, that Verizon shop where H+H used to be, the stores across Broadway – or NYC’s own network of security cameras has or had security camera footage of the crash. I would cross my fingers that NYPD has made the rounds to check for existing footage.
Thank you West Side Rag for the great neighborhood reporting.
I walked by around 10:30 or so — only saw the aftermath…but it looked like the cab was going up bway and there was a van that looks like it was going southbound on bway and hit the cab when trying to make the left onto 80th.
Maybe the cab sped through the yellow. Maybe the van made a turn and didn’t look or didn’t have ROW…either way this is something that happens a lot on Bway – especially during the summer when the trees are in bloom and visibility is impaired.
Who does have the right of way when making left turn across Broadway? My friend was in a similar accident on Broadway and 81st last summer. Cars begin the turn with a green light on Broadway. Then they’re waiting in the median and in front of them is a red light. Some wait for a green light others finish the turn. Who is right?
Cops will give you conflicting information about this. I believe if there is a median, once you start your turn and you’re facing in that direction you now have to obey that traffic light. Otherwise you run the risk of interfering with cars that are traveling WITH the light and pedestrians who might be crossing that intersection.
these photos are about a half hour after the accident which involved a tropican truck and a cab…. photos are after debris was cleaned up… there were five cop cars and an amulance took about a half hour to make it to the site to take driver away never saw another person taken awat in amulance
