A gas main ruptured early on Thursday morning, forcing the evacuation of about 100 people on West 60th street between Amsterdam Avenue and West End Avenue.
FDNY responded to a report of a gas leak on 60th street at 7:43 a.m., and evacuated eight buildings around the area, including a school, a spokesman told us. They had the leak under control by around 9 a.m.
One of our readers was swimming in the pool at the Gertrude Ederle Recreation Center at the time of the rupture.
“Today I was swimming in the Gertrude Ederle Recreation center, working on my backstroke, when we had to evacuate the building because of a gas leak. It is not so easy to exit a building quickly when you are in a pool. Made it out and and am wondering when the building will reopen?”
An employee at the center said it was expected to reopen around 5 p.m., but the pool will remain closed for the day. Call 212-397-3159 to confirm before going over.
