Downy is promoting their new “April Fresh” detergent Wednesday by doing a load of your laundry for free. And you might even be able to meet a Reality TV celebrity who is for some reason a part of this promotion. Fashion blog Racked had the scoop:
The laundromat where you can score the free wash (and dry) is located at 224-226 West 82nd Street and you can stop by from 11:30am til 6pm to, “experience the Downy Difference firsthand.” Lauren Conrad is, for some reason, hosting the media portion of the event—no word on if she’ll hang around for the public wash-o-rama.
Don’t ask “why?” Just go grab your smelly socks!
I think it is likely they are going to be capturing ‘real people’ comments and perhaps video bites for the P&G / Downy website or a real people webisode Bring your pen to sign the release and enjoy.
Great landromat if you live in the area – interesting that they are doing this.
BAH, HUMBUG!
The whole thing smacks of the same crass commercialism that contaminates every aspect of the Web, destroying what was once a noble idea, AND our society’s obsession with ‘real people as celebrity-gods.’
Want proof? Reference the stories that young adults today think there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be “famous” (rather than those ‘old-fashioned’ goals like: wanting to do good, help society, find their inner selves, etc.)
Then there was the recent story that pop-culture mags sell obscene numbers of issues whenever they feature a Reality TV “star” (Khloe Kardashian, anyone?)on their cover … a far cry from the days when a talented actor/actress with real talent would boost sales.
We’re in a race to the bottom…and we keep winning.
Like it or not – the internet is mass media. Did you think it was going to be free forever? Pretty soon – you are going to be watching all your live ‘TV’ via the internet too. There is no free lunch. But clearly – a free wash or two. Relax and go with it.
