British actor Alan Cumming, a star of The Good Wife and a one-man show of Macbeth coming to Broadway in a few days, said on twitter that he had $300 and his phone swiped from his locker at the YMCA on 63rd street a few days ago. He did not have many kind words for the thief.
I just had my phone and 300 dollars stolen from my @ymca locker! The one on W 63rd st and Central Park West!!Wtf?!#hopeyouenjoyitasshole

He also lost his Hale & Hearty card, which can be very traumatic. Luckily, he has a great sense of humor.
The worst thing about being robbed this weekend was losing my @haleandheartyny soup loyalty card. I was so close.

It’s notable that Cumming works out at the YMCA, not the Reebok gym on 67th street and Columbus like every other celebrity on the Upper West Side. Let’s hope his brush with the mean streets doesn’t dissuade him from mingling with the rest of us!

Why even bother having lockers?
that wouldn’t happen at the Tribeca Y–Its closed down!
I had my I Phone stolen from there a few months ago as I played racquetball. I tried and tried to get some help, noone was able to do that, so I feel for you Alan. they have videotapes of the floors and the activity, but noone took responsibility and helped me look at the tapes. I ended up having to buy a new I phone. They should have better security.
Don’t know if this was the case – but those of you still using school locker style Master combination locks with a dial – don’t. They can be popped open with a screwdriver in two seconds (as I learned when a bunch of us at Equinox were burgled one Saturday afternoon a year or so back). Use a “casehardened” Sesame or Master padlock lock with the little number dials on the bottom. Not easily forced open or cut, except with a large (and hard to conceal) bold cutter.
It sounds as if Mr. Cumming did not lock up his valuables in the wall safe by the check-in. I haven’t been to the West Side Y in a long time, but I assume those individual safes by the check in are still there. NEVER leave anything of value in the dressing room lockers – you’re just asking for trouble.
Wall safe keys always seemed way too easy to loose/separate from during a workout – but that is certainly an option. My club takes zero responsibility when you are burgled – even when committed my someone who entered the club without a membership.
Obviously he didn’t have a lock. I’ve been a member there since 2007 and have never had a problem with something being stolen – why, because I lock everything up. This is NYC- how naive of anyone to think you can leave cash or some valuable phone or electronic any place and not have it stolen. Lock your belongings up – that’s why they have lockers – and take your chance with someone carrying bolt-cutters.
There is not one word in this thread that would indicate first hand knowledge that there was no lock.
Ken – The converse is true as well. My experience there has been you don’t get robbed when you lock up your belongings. In any gym.
That’s too bad!! Hope you recover your items!
Admire mr Cummings work for many years!
Awesome artist !!!!
