The Food Emporium on the corner of 68th street and Broadway is closing, and the store will soon be liquidating much of its remaining inventory, starting with a 10% off sale on Friday.
The sale is likely to escalate as the days go by — the store plans to close its doors for good on May 4, and won’t be doing much restocking between now and then, a manager told us.
The Food Emporium’s closure has sparked all sorts of discussion about the neighborhood and the store itself. Check out the voluminous comments on our first story.
The store’s hours will also change during the liquidation, and it will no longer accept certain discount cards. See the signs below:
Thanks to Rosa for the tip.
At 10% off the prices here will still be about 30% higher than they should be.
Mike nailed it.
Given that coupons and other premium and discount incentive programs are no longer being honored, I wonder if the contents of the store have already been sold to an inventory liquidation company who will now make their money by reselling what they bought for an alleged discount.
Here we come, Pioneer …… yipes!
As least Pioneer has a good beer variety… and Frank’s Hot Sauce. That’s about it.
It does boil down to management. I personally stopped waiting on line to buy cold cuts, for example. There may have been 1 or 2 people behind the counter, but no one ever asked me if I needed any help. I remember I used to have to track down the manager and have him go to the back and get me someone to slice up some turkey and hand it to me with a snarl. Yes, it was convenient for anyone who lives in the 60s and lower 70s. But it was always over priced. I don’t relish the idea of a Walgreen’s (yikes) taking its place. And may probably even miss it during a cold winter day when I find myself trudging up to Fairway some 5+ blocks away. But, the store was poorly run, looked dowdy, and there was no customer service. Sorry…customer service and competitive pricing is the name of the game. Don’t play that game, and you go out of business. – Kirby Sommers
