An explosion in the West 70’s shortly before 8 p.m. on Wednesday brought out dozens of police officers and firefighters. Our tipster, who is known as Trenchologist, sent in the photo above from West 76th Street and said that she overheard a firefighter saying that the explosion was caused by fireworks.
“Overheard firefighter on scene: Someone playing with fireworks, went awry. No fire seems to have ensued,” she wrote.
“I had a great view of it and clearly saw fireworks go off between CPW and Columbus,” tweeted Jason Haber. “It looked like 2, maybe 3 bursts hit at the same time. Red and white were the flash colors.”
Apparently, there was no fire, and the FDNY had dispersed within about an hour.
In the immediate aftermath, FDNY said they had no information about an explosion or fireworks. No word on whether anyone was injured.
We’ll let you know as we get more updates.
Heard one loud explosion around 7:30 p.m. tonight and then a few smaller ones. Lots of fire engines, too. I’m on corner of 74th/Amsterdam above Andy’s Deli.
Saw the light out of the corner of my eye and heard the explosion from WEA 20th floor. I was hoping it was fire works and not an explosion.
DID NOT HEAR A DARN THING!
Of course, that COULD be b/c we are down here in Florida for the winter ………. or …. my hearing has finally gone bad.
