The top of a crane that’s attached about 80 stories high at 57th Street and 6th Avenue has just collapsed, and a massive portion of it is dangling precipitously. “This is bad…it’s going to fall into the street,” said George Guerrero, who sent us these photographs that he took from his Upper West Side apartment. If you are near the area, leave immediately.
“Alert Issued 10/29/12 at 3:15 PM. Due to a crane collapse at 157 West 57th Street in Manhattan, all occupants of buildings on West 57th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues must immediately move to the lower floors of your building and make contact with your building safety representative. Citizens are advised to avoid this area. Follow instructions of emergency personnel.”
The crane is working on the new luxury building, One57, which is expected to be the largest residential building in Manhattan when it’s finished.

Re: “… the new luxury building, One57, which is expected to be the largest residential building in Manhattan when it’s finished.”
NOT LARGEST…BUT TALLEST … UNTIL 432 PARK IS DONE IN A FEW YEARS(56th & Park, site of former Drake Hotel), as well as Terre Verre (Jacques Nouvel’s thing planned for W. 54th next to MoMA) and 225 W. 57th, ALL OF WHICH COULD BE EVEN TALLER.
But One57 may yet retain an “-est” claim…that would be UGLIEST super-tall (the new designation for such monstrosities)as the architect appears to have taste only on his taste-buds. The building is clad in varyingly hideous shades of blue, and the front entrance on W.57th is done in waving vertical stripes of aluminum!!! FEH!!!! It looks like an escapee from Miami Beach’s Collins Avenue!
