News:
The City Council approved a portion of the Riverside-West End historic district, preserving dozens of buildings. Via the West End Preservation Society: “The first of three proposed historic district extensions, to include the Avenue, has made it through to the end of the designation process. The designated area, which is in Council Member Gale Brewer’s district, includes W 79th St to W 87th St on West End Ave, Riverside Dr, parts of the west side of Broadway and the cross streets that connect them all. Council Member Brewer has been a supporter of this designation and WEPS from the start of this journey, in 2007. WEPS hopes to see all sections to historic district conclusions in 2013.” Landmark West wrote about the vote here. Read our story about the district, which includes a map of the affected buildings, here.
In other historic preservation news, Landmark West’s Director of Preservation Cristiana Pena is moving on after today to a position at the massive Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx after 5 years at LW. Cristiana was a very effective advocate for the West End district, and dozens of other UWS projects. God speed!
