As the final guts were ripped out of H&H Bagels on 80th street today in preparation for who-knows-what corporation will take over the space, one final emblem to the old business remained. A column with painted tiles called out to passersby: “Hot Bagels”.
The column appears to have been uncovered in the process of demolition — I don’t remember it being there in the years before the shop closed. It’s also odd for having the word “Midtown” on it, as if it was transplanted from the company’s old 46th Street location.
Check out our article on the closing of H&H Bagels last June, with a collection of quotes about the famous shop.
Thanks to Jessica Morsa for climbing up on a chair to take the photo above, and for the photo below.
Midtown is the name of the bagel store that was on that spot before it was replaced by H&H.
Wow! That’s neat! So how long has a bagel place of one brand or another been at that corner in total? I had been hoping that Bagel & Co. would move in, but I guess they’re happy where they are.
