In a conversation last week with a construction worker, I learned that another large Duane Reade (the escalator is already in place for the second level) will open by August in the high-end building, The Laureate at 2150 Broadway (at 76th Street). That will mean a Duane Reade every 2 blocks on the stretch from 70th St. to 79th St.
First banks on every corner in the 90’s, then Starbucks on every corner in the 00’s, now Duane Reade for the aging population of the next decade.
Or perhaps they are just trying to keep CVS from getting a foot in the door of Manhattan’s lucrative market. Don’t ever forget that Duane Reade is now owned by Walgreen’s, with all the “power” that ownership implies.

That’s always been the plan… The old Duane Reade was temporarily re-located when they originally tore down that block. It’s been in what I refer to as an “UWS doublewide” for the past 2-3 years at 78th St. I am hoping Mark gets to run the new pharmacy…
I hope they put in a large video screen
